What is Optimal Health?
By: Jim Goetz Optimal health can be defined and identified by the lack of dis-ease within the body. The lack of dis-ease may also be viewed as the presence of ease. Dis-ease is present wen certain pathogens such as bacteria, virus’, fungus and even parasites invade the body. The body then reacts by defending itself against these foreign invaders. We then may experience a plethora of symptoms brought on in response to said invaders by our body and not by the invaders themselves. Disease can also be viewed as dysfunction. When the body is dysfunctional, it is not at ease. Dysfunction is often experienced as pain. Again, the pain is caused by our bodies in response to a lack of ease within. What then is optimal health and how do we experience it? IT would be neat and clean to describe optimal health as the way in which were born. This however, would fail to pass the truth test. Unfortunately and quite sadly, infants are often born in a diseased state due to either their mothers improper care while they were in the womb or due to poor genetics. It is believed there are four pillars of optimal health. When these facets are firm, they come together with optimal health being at the apex. When one of these pillars is deficient, the body becomes insufficient of peak performance and sub-optimal health is experienced. The four pillars are: physical, mental, emotional and chemical. I like to think of them as corners in the foundation of a pyramid. When they all come together, optimal health is experienced at the top. Pyramids such as the Great Pyramid of Giza have held strong for thousands of years. IT has weathered some of the most harsh of conditions yet it still stands tall. If one of those four corners were to falter though, the entire structure would crumble. Your body is a temple as is a pyramid. By ensuring a proper foundation and you are sound physically, emotionally, and chemically, your body will be in optimal health. Your body will be in a state of homeostasis, which is the bodies goal at all times of each and every day. Remove a pillar and homeostasis becomes unattainable and dis-ease/ dysfunction is experienced. Be astute and dedicated to these four pillars of health and you will enjoy optimal health in the pyramid you know to be your body. Do you have questions or comments?
