Sugar Addiction with Michael Collins
In this episode, I (Jim Goetz) sit down with the founder of sugaraddiction.com, Michael Collins. For the past 30 years he has not consumed sugar in any form - at least not intentionally. Growing up, Michael was raised to LOVE sugar. His interest in sugar addiction began in the early days of his recovery from substance use disorder. After quitting drugs and alcohol, Michael noticed people in his groups were gaining ten to fifteen pounds. Curious and concerned, he started to talk about this with his recovery buddies. This led him to decide to quit sugar with the help of some amazing mentors. Since then he has helped hundreds of people personally and thousands online - quit, reduce or get under control runaway sugar use. In fifty years, the diagnostic tests will be able to prove the addictive properties of sugar. Cultural and societal norms are stopping people from believing the harmful effects this drug can have. Parents are the biggest culprits behind sugar addiction in our society. Loads of cakes, ice cream, and soda are dropped off at birthday parties, making it nearly impossible to avoid. Then, Michael explains some of the problems with the sugar detoxes that are on the market today. Reaching for sugar is something people do to calm down and relieve stress. However, this connection is rarely made by people who are looking to detox and diet. Detoxing from sugar will result in physical and mental withdrawals; joining some sort of group is essential for a smooth recovery. Then, Michael gives his perspective on the keto flu; it is all only sugar withdrawal symptoms. If someone has a terrible sugar habit, you will have a feeling of impending doom when not consuming the product. Some folks, biochemically, cannot just have a little bit of sugar without compulsively using it. Very few people can cut back on caffeine, flour, and sugar all at the same time. However, caffeine and sugar are so wired together that they both need to be cut. Later, Michael explains why pre-planning meals for the workday will help you to guarantee success and the necessity behind visualizing how your lifestyle changes will make your future better.
