(Colts Neck, NJ) The term self-care is an emerging focus for 2019. But what does self-care actually mean? In the health and wellness arena, self-care can range from getting more sleep, eating better, exercising, meditation, yoga, spending more time with family, working smarter, community/volunteer work, and education. In essence, self-care can be anything that can help you function better in your daily life from a physical, emotional, and mental standpoint. As a wife, mom of three, business woman, NPC figure competitor and Ph.D. student, life can be extremely demanding. Just writing that may seem overwhelming to some. However, when you have passion for what you do and want to do it to the best of your ability, there has to be a certain level of self-care involved. Interestingly, the idea of self-care may seem counterintuitive at times. As a parent, it is instinctual to put the needs of children ahead of your own. If you have ever been on a plane and actually listened to the flight attendants directions regarding emergency oxygen masks falling from the ceiling, they always advise putting the mask on yourself first before providing assistance to others. This falls in line with the message that if you are not functioning to the best of your ability, then you will not be able to fully give the attention needed by others.
-Preventing disease and illness
-Makes you feel good -Allows you to be more productive, engaged, and connected -Find balance within yourself -Assist in weight loss due to the reduction of excess cortisol levels -Improve your overall quality of life that can increase your longevity The act of self-care takes time to figure out. Just as creating a new habit requires consistency or building muscle requires strength training, self-care requires commitment. The more you do it, the easier it becomes and the more self-compassion you will develop. We can all get bogged down with the little negative gremlins that tell us we can’t do something. As your self-compassion increases, those negative thoughts will slowly start to fade away. Remember you are capable of amazing things. You are loved. You can live the best life possible. You are worth investing in yourself. There is no better time than right now to start engaging in self-care. What are you waiting for? Do something for you right now!
