How to Shovel a Chiropractic Perspective with Dr. Michael Brandon (Getting FIT for Winter Weather)2/10/2019
Dr. Michael Brandon (Colts Neck, NJ)
Winter is here at it's foremost currently in Colts Neck NJ, and every other day we are threatened with the potential for winter weather from slippery sheets of ice to inches and feet of heavy snow. Even for winter weather lovers, one of the first thoughts that come to mind is the undeniable obligation of snow removal. At it’s most refined, shoveling snow when done properly, is a great full body workout. However, it can also be quite intense, especially to those not currently accustomed to heavy exercise; this is typically where the winter pain woes originate. Whenever a new workout is introduced, it taxes our bodies in a more intense way. Recovery becomes slower and the chance of injury is slightly increased. Now introduce shoveling, which even for those who commit to regular exercise, is just not a motion our bodies are typically accustomed to performing. Most of us tend to lift and throw snow out of our way. There is a proper mechanical way of doing this by keeping your core engaged, avoid any spinal rotation, engage the legs as much as possible, and toss the snow lightly in front of you as to not over stress the shoulder. When possible however, keep the snow loads light, push the snow with the shovel opposed to lifting, minimize the distance it’s being carried, and take frequent breaks before it feels necessary. Other safety tips include: · Doing a light warmup prior to shoveling · Pace your self · Never twist your back. If you have to rotate, do so at the hips · Use proper diaphragmatic breathing · Have regular wellness Chiropractic care for injury prevention The most common musculoskeletal injuries obtained from this activity include back strain, herniated discs, headaches, neck pain, rotator cuff pain, and shoulder/ knee joint pain. Slips and falls from ice is also unfortunately common. It can lead to at it’s worse broken bones, and far more common injuries such as swollen joints, bursitis, wrist and hip sprain, and even move the base of your spine, the sacrum, out of alignment, which can all be assisted with chiropractic care. We never want to experience pain, however even with perfect form and taking every precaution possible, accidents may happen.
