For some time I have been asked, Jim, what do you eat? I have been told by many they have no time to eat. When they do they are so hungry they eat everything in sight. Are you one to eat sugar and processed foods because it’s simple? It’s easy right? It’s easy to eat something in a package as opposed to preparing and cooking it. Even the bodybuilders I coach who are literally spot on with their nutrition to the tenth of a calorie and perfect in their macronutrients each and every day struggle in the off season to maintain something legitimate to follow for the rest of their lives.
As much as I would love to say I am perfect in what I eat each and every day, I am not. I am actually more disappointed in others who are disappointed and let down when they see me eat at times. After practice on Friday nights, whoever is around or comes by we go out to the Colts Neck Inn (Colts Neck, NJ) or Huddys (Colts Neck, NJ) or Fireside (Marlboro, NJ) for some apps and drinks. The moment I eat a chip; whoever we are with literally has a jaw that smacks the table in shock and awe that I ate a chip! It seems they are disappointed and devastated. As a result, I feel I let them down. It took a while to understand how to come to terms with this. On one aspect, my diet is 99% straight. But that 1% can let others down. After some deep thought I realized it’s better for them to see me have a chip than think I do not. The more I can achieve and succeed in life while having a couple chips with spinach dip on a Friday night, the more they can realize it’s not out of their grasp. I firmly believe that others will do what I do but even greater. That’s my goal. Be better than me. It’s not only the goal I have for my children, it’s the goal I have for each and every individual I coach and work with. Be better than me. There’s the idea of cheat days and cheat meals. Now my 10 chips and spinach dip on a Friday night is not exactly a cheat meal. It still fits into my nutrient breakdown for the day. In terms of cheating; is it okay for a husband/ wife to cheat on their spouse, even just once? Is it okay for an alcoholic to have a cheat day and have a few drinks? What I personally do is creative eating. If I know I want a glass or two of wine that night, I calculate and track it and therefore plan for the day accordingly. This is a lifestyle. It’s not difficult anymore as it’s habit. Habits take time and it’s only through desire that one creates a habit. I will admit, I am pretty dead on in what I eat most every day. It’s not difficult for me as I have been this way for five years now. It’s habit. I live a mostly ketogenic lifestyle and will consume a few carbohydrates from vegetation in the evening. But at the end of the day, if you break down what I consume, the macronutrient breakdown fits the mold of a ketogenic lifestyle. Personally I do it because I like the foods. I like the way I feel. My energy is higher. My cognitive function is increased. My strength and endurance is greater at 38 years of age then it was at 28 years of age and yes, greater than 18 years of age. I do my best to humbly admit, I am far healthier and fitter than I was at 18 years old even while being an NCAA athlete playing for the top ranked baseball team in the nation and living in Florida. Other than being more educated in anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and program design, its due to a greater understanding in nutrition and biochemistry and the desire to follow and practice what I preach. The empathy I fully get is the busy day. When one is so busy, they find no time to eat. Being too hungry by the days end allows one to be more compelled to eat whatever and whenever. The idea then would be to be able to eat throughout the day without stopping at fast food restaurants or eating carbohydrate and sugar laden processed foods. I have been asked numerous times what to buy and what to eat. I have been asked, Jim what do you eat? So I wanted to share with you here and now from Colts Neck, New Jersey to Tampa, Florida to Australia and around the world, what Jim Goetz eats to achieve an 8% walking around body fat level as well as being healthy and extremely fit while maintaining an 80 hour work week and raising three children. First and foremost, I will admit I am often too busy to go to the grocery store. I have been utilizing Thrive Marketplace for many of my food needs. My wife Chantea Goetz will go to Whole Foods in Manalapan, NJ or Stop and Shop in Aberdeen, NJ for produce and some of the things Thrive Marketplace does not have (eggs, walnut milk, flax milk) Very recently, I began using sauces (ketchup, bbq, steak sauce, Thai chili, teriyaki, and stevia sweeteners) from Guy Gone Keto Yes, the owner Thom King did appear on our Functionised Podcast but because he did, we were impressed by his products and as a result have began to use them. We believe in him and his formulations for the health of ourselves and our entire family. I use his products for flavor, enjoyment and I know it will not negatively impact my performance.
As someone who is constantly on the go or in the zone, I do not always eat as I should. I have personally made the choice to adopt intermittent fasting into my life as not only do I believe it helps with increasing vitality and longevity, but it also helps with my lack of eating. In eating within an 8 hour window, I will not beat myself up for not eating first thing in the morning.
The one aspect to keep in mind is performance. We do need fuel and the right fuel to perform at our peak. As a parent, you are no good to your child if he or she is laying around in their filth or not having a decent meal prepared for themselves. If you are in a stressful job, what good are you if you cannot meet the task at hand and excel? If you are competing in an athletic endeavour, what good are you lying on the ground or performing below your expectation? Eating to perform is essential. I have included my list of food I regularly purchase. This is not necessarily right for you. I suggest you try some things and if you like them, incorporate them into your life. If you do not like them, then contact me and let me know some things you do like as I may like to incorporate them into mine.
