On today’s show, Dr Mike DC and The Mad Scientist and F.I.T. Chief of Human Performance Jim Goetz speak with 9Round kickboxing and HIIT Gym owners Bethany and Joey Selage out of Colts Neck NJ. They go in depth about their unique gym setup, their personal journeys into finding fitness, the science behind HIIT and kickboxing training, their unique heart rate monitoring software, and of course, Chantea, Jim, and Mike’s experience with the 9 Rounds workout. First off, there are no class times. The premise is having 9 different stations, or rounds as you will, and each is a different exercise or boxing workout that is performed for 3 minutes with an “active rest” in between. So when you arrive and are ready, you just hop into the rotation and do your 9 rounds for a 30minute total body experience so there’s no need to schedule your day around when a class is available, you just show up when you’re ready. In the 9 rounds, a few will be body/light weight exercises and drills, there will be a few rounds on the various types of punching bags, and there’s always 1 free form round where you are doing some sort of pad work directly with a trainer. Whether it be hand pads, mauy tai or kicking pads, etc. You also never have to worry about body adaptation because every workout is different! You can come in every day over the week and will get a different workout each and every time. -One of the first things you see while walking into the gym is this giant monitor on the far wall with names, colors, and numbers on it; what is this system about and used for? At 9Round we have our own system called 9 Rounds Pulse System. All of our members get a heart rate monitor and it keeps track of your progress intra workout and scores you on how well you are doing in terms of staying in the perfect fat burning state and presents it on the large screen. It’s a color coded system so you can look at it briefly and know if you are pushing hard enough, or even too hard. You score the most points, 3, for being in the yellow zone, and 1 if in the green or red showing that you can physically move harder without burning out or that you’re overtraining. We are even going to begin having contests and rewards based on this system starting in the next few months. - What equipment should someone bring or have ready for the HIIT/kickboxing workout? Your body, and nothing else! Our members each will receive their own 9Rounds kickboxing gloves, hand wraps, taught how to use the hand wraps, and the Pulse monitor. We literally try to make it as easy as possible to come at anytime and enjoy a great and brilliantly fun workout! -Who could benefit from this style of workout?
